Hollowfolk

EnvironmentCaves, deep earth
+1 BonusShadow
Typical VibePatient, silent, role-bound, mother-darkness

The hollowfolk dwell where light does not reach. Patient, silent, seen only in glimpses. The darkness is not their enemy — it is their mother. Their society is strictly structured by role, deep underground, where they have found secrets beyond comprehension. They are led by the Matriarchs, who alone know what the deep truly holds.

Society

Structure

Hollowfolk society is strictly structured by role. Every individual does what they are good at — and it is important to stay good at it. There is no shame in a narrow role, only in neglecting it. A tunnel-shaper shapes tunnels; a spore-tender tends spores; a deep-listener listens. Roles are assigned by aptitude and confirmed by the Matriarchs, but excelling within one's role is a matter of personal honour, not external enforcement.

Leaders

The hollowfolk are led by the Matriarchs — originally a single line of sisters, each ruling her own settlement. Officially, the bloodline remains pure to this day. Only the Matriarchs know if this is still true. They present themselves in elegant, large, almost insectoid dresses with filigree, translucent wing-like extensions and matching diadems — purely decorative, reflecting an appreciation for the strange beauty of the deep's creatures. A Matriarch's authority is absolute within her settlement, but she is expected to embody the patience and stillness her people revere.

Commoners

Hollowfolk are miners, tunnel-shapers, spore-tenders, deep-listeners, and echo-hunters. They are comfortable in silence and can sit motionless for hours, making them exceptional at work that requires patience. The insectoid aesthetic of the Matriarchs trickles down in simpler forms — a cloak with ribbed veining, a headpiece shaped like antennae — but fully articulated wing-dresses are reserved for the Matriarchs alone. Knowledge is the true currency: routes, stone-types, water sounds, and the names of things that should not be named.

Cities

Hollowfolk cities are vast underground caverns. Deephall is the largest known — a cavern lit by phosphorescent fungi, with carved stone dwellings and bridges spanning subterranean rivers. It takes three days to cross on foot. The hollowfolk say there are deeper halls that even they have not explored, though the Matriarchs are quiet on what lies below the lowest inhabited levels.

Secrets the Matriarchs keep

The Matriarchs found something in the deep — not yet defined, perhaps an access to a place beyond the fog. Only they know what it is, what it wants, or whether it has always been there. They do not speak of it, not even to each other outside the ritual gatherings where its presence is acknowledged in silence.

Attitudes toward other folks

FolkAttitude
MountainfolkThe only surface folk hollowfolk trade with regularly — deep-mined minerals for surface goods. Always on hollowfolk terms: trade happens at pre-arranged cave-mouths, never in mountain holds. The relationship is practical, not warm.
FenfolkMuted curiosity. Fenfolk live at the threshold of the world, like hollowfolk do — but their threshold is treeline and water, not stone and dark. There is respect without understanding.
HavenfolkIndifference. Havenfolk's walls and records mean nothing underground. Hollowfolk find their obsession with lineage baffling — what matters is what you do, not whose blood you carry.
Fog PeopleQuiet recognition. Both emerged changed from isolation. Hollowfolk wonder what the fog did to them — just as they wonder what the deep did to themselves. The question is acknowledged in silence and never answered.
